CABOTAJE BLOG: Be literate, No to CyberBullying

By: Hector H. Cabotaje

The world are changing rapidly into the deeper knowledge of technology. Some of us uses technology to encourage, motivate, to gain knowledge, or for the goodness but other people are preferring to use the technology to harm others. I saw a lot of harmful used of technology in social media, or cyberbullying. They make fun of someone’s face to gain likes or followers then I go to the comment section and I saw the harmful comments of people and I suddenly thought the person that they were making fun of, I felt pity on that person because those comments can leads to depression, if that person is weak and very sensitive he/she may end up in suicide. I think about the ones who posted the picture and those who gave bad comments if where did their learning go.

We made a digital story telling about cyberbullying that shows the relationship of learning, culture, technology and literacy. I think the learning of that story is when the teacher teach her students about the R.A No. 10627 or the anti-bullying act of 2013, the teacher needs to teach that because of the bad culture of her students. On the story, the main character use technology to entertain himself then he saw the picture of his classmate then he click the comment section and saw the harsh comments of his other classmates. In that point, the technology has being use, when it comes to literacy the bullies are illiterate because they do not know the right use of technology but after the teacher taught the Anti-Bullying act of 2013 to her students, her students become literate because now they knew that cyberbullying is bad. Actually, the main character is already literate because he is the one who told their teacher about the bullying that is happening to his classmate. As a student, the relationship of learning, culture, technology and literacy is when I apply the learning to have a good culture, to make a good use of technology and also to be literate. For me, when the learning doesn’t apply it can be turn into waste so if I did not use the learning then I am not literate or illiterate because I have the knowledge but I did not apply it then this might be a problem when using technology because I and also, it can leads to have a bad culture. I think that is the reason of why is the learning, culture, technology and literacy are interconnected.

I want to share my experience in doing animation, is so expensive using the data or load (I don’t know to those who have WIFI) because sometimes the slides that I made was missing so I need to do it again from the start over and over again. It is also time consuming, actually that is my first time to do an animation so for me it is time consuming. Another is lagging, I do not know if the cause of lagging is from my computer but it is so embarrassing because instead of fast work it became slow because of lagging. But despite of those circumstances it is so enjoyable and gives me a lot of fun because I knew that it is another knowledge or skill that I can be use when I want to make my own storytelling.

ALBAÑO BLOG:“Respeto a los pueblos indígenas” (Respect Indigenous People)

By: Ginaida, Albano

Indigenous Peoples Rights Act 1997 (Republic Act No. 8371 of 1997). “An Act to recognize, protect and promote the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples, creating a National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, establishing implementing mechanisms, appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes.” For the past years regardless that there are already laws protecting indigenous people all over the globe but discrimination and taking advantages of them has still been a global problem so the question and concern now is how can we able as students to help IP’s to be enlighten and do something to fight for their own rights so that no greedy people would dare to go against them. Base also on the UDHR Article 1. “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” Everyone has the right to live without fear and that I think would be the best remedy to every IP’s, to make them realized that no one has the rights to hurt, use, and make fun of them.

The world is changing as fast as that we cannot feel it anymore but it does happen, countries like the Philippines is a very diverse country composed of so many group of islands that also have group of IP’s in it. I felt like technology advancement really help in terms of many things that makes mankind’s life easier but with regards to culture, technology act as a medium to reminds people of the lost tradition the make us who we are. IP’s have so many unique culture, they make sure that they practice them and pass them to the next generation. Their unique culture makes them stand out and known among the rest of other tribes. I believe that Philippine government should pay attention on implying their laws so that everyone would be grateful and will be more participative in the government that might result to unity and diversity respect. Discrimination have been so timely because the government itself don’t have such power in fully implementing it in every parts of it’s country. IP’s makes a big impact in the worlds preservation of nature because they themselves love it and they will do everything to protect it. In my experienced making animation using technology I realized that as a simple student we could make an impact to the world in terms of so many ways for example in my topic which is discrimination among IP’s, I used technology as medium to promote awareness not just in my co-student but most probably to the people in the community and with that I felt like in my simple way I myself make a move in making the world much nicer with diversity respect. On the other hand, we all know that not all IP’s are able to finish college that’s way it is also one of the reason why they are being discriminated. Now I think if we could do something in making them literate is to make them aware of their rights and be enlighten that they deserve to be treated equally.

All in all, I would like to sum-up this whole thing with a message telling all people the we could be a move in every depriving situation for others, it might not be easy but I can tell that with determine personality and willingness to do or help other people we could have an amazing world were in greedy people will not be allowed to take part in one community. I remember when making animation with the use technology it takes so much of my time but satisfied me as the time we finished it. Culture might vary in different community but it’s our responsibility to pay respect on their own practices. Illiterate ones can be Literate if and only If someone would help them to know what they need to know. Technology is constantly advancing and we could use it in spreading awareness so that people would be more careful and the world will be more likable to live. As what Julius Erving said; “I firmly believe that respect is a lot more important, and a lot greater, than popularity.

ALBAÑO BLOG: Insight of Reading

Written By: Ginaida L. Albaño

I know that people have wondered why reading is important. There seems so many other things to do with one’s time. There so many reasons why reading is important. If anyone is not a god reader, it’s not a sign of low intelligence. As far as I know reading is also a problem in our society. Many of the adults are illiterate so they don’t know what instruction is in the medicine bottle. So it was too scary for them. Reading is one of the skills to get a job and a lot of paper works that you need to read in part of the job. Reading is important because it develops the mind. Our brain also needs exercise so that we can understand the written words.

As a future educator when you teach your students to read, it also helps them to develop their language skills. No one can help you but yourself. And there are many ways to learn to read or to enhance their ability of reading. They can use magazines, or the internet. It is one of the tools for a person to learn, to understand how to read and to enhance your reading. Reading basic books also can help you. reading is very important in our lives because learning, spoken and written can help us as a person. As a future educator we can help our students to improve or develop their reading skills so that they will not suffer in the future. As a college student reading is very important. Why? Because if you don’t like to read, your memory will not improve. We need to love reading because it will help us in the future. When we read well, it can help our students. We can inspire them why reading is important in our lives. It will also help us Especially when we make a lesson plan because as we read the article we will have more knowledge and deep ideas on how we can improve our lesson plan. So reading is very important, as a student it also help us to improve words spelling becomes easier. Also, reading helps to expand our vocabulary. Reading is helped me a lot. Especially when I’m reading Bible or Our Daily bread. Because when I’m reading, I understand what it means to convey to me. And I have the knowledge of what to teach the children every mission trip. Through reading we not only develop but also us a person.

The hope for the flowers story had big impact to me. As I read this story I felt excitement because I knew I had to learn a lot about this story. Sometimes in our lives we have trials and tribulations. Through life’s crazy roads and mazes. It is a story that will awaken me to see the reality and to still discover and explore. This story has shown to me not to give up something immediately if we want to do in life. Sometimes in our lives it’s a challenge because it just shows how far we can go. We also have to encounter people who have done nothing but upset your decisions for yourself. I also see myself in stripe because sometimes in our lives, there are actually people who have done nothing but intervene in your life decisions or to disturb your mind. But as stripe did, he didn’t listen to what others were saying to him but he did what his heart wanted and eventually he succeeded because he knew for himself that he could and he had confidence in himself. But the best thing to do, don’t listen to the more than you listen to what your heart and mind tells you. only yourself know what you will complete. know what is best for yourself.

CABOTAJE BLOG:The goodness of reading

Written by: Hector H. Cabotaje

Reading is one of the most important things to everyone because it serves as an exercise in our brain. Reading also helps us to develop our thinking, speaking and listening skills. As I read through various articles I discovered things that most of the people did not know and then I realized that reading was very helpful to discover things. As I was reading also I have noticed that a lot of imagination was coming out of my brain and it is so refreshing. Reading has an ability to make our mind mature. I’ve made myself mature with the help of reading, like I said reading helps us to develop our thinking skills. When I am reading, I’ve learned a lot not only in myself (reading also teaches about ourselves but in a particular story or article) but also in the other things such as about our world, humans, animals and different cultures.

As a college student, reading is very essential because it helps me to have a better understanding in some things, and it also helps me to analyse the problems or sentences easily and it also gave me a colourful mind. Reading has been a part of my life, especially now as I studying in college because reading helps my mind to expand and speed-up my thinking skills and also sharpen my memory. But I’ve done a lot of training and one of them is to forget about useless things like playing mobile games, hang out with my friends and other nonsense things. At first it was difficult to focus on reading because of the obstacle or the ones I prefer to do that are useless but the more I read, the more interested I become in what I read. Reading is very effective in my studies because I get ideas or information that are not pointed out in schools and it also helps me to become acquainted or familiar with words that are quite profound that is very helpful and effective to my studies. Reading has helped me a lot of things, like the right attitude or etiquette when I am talking to my classmates or teachers. In college it is necessary to be nice to everybody because they can help me when I need them, reading taught me how to be a better student, friend, and also to be a good son. Reading is like filling the bucket with water, as long as the faucet are continually dropping water, the bucket will become full until it overflows. The bucket symbolizes our mind, the water symbolizes the knowledge, information, or ideas and the faucet symbolizes the tools that we use for reading. If we continually read, the knowledge that we gain will continually increase.

I have read the book entitled ‘’The hope for the flowers’’. This story is about a caterpillar looking for a deeper sense of life. We know that caterpillar is destined to be a butterfly, but before you become a butterfly you will undergo in sacrifices. The story taught me something about life, that before I reach my goals/dream I need to sacrifice. Like the caterpillar, they must covered themselves a silky thread or a cocoon and that will be their greatest sacrifice because they do not know what will happen after that. I’ve realized that I need to take a risk even if I’m not sure what will happen after, because that’s life. I need to be strong in present because tomorrow is always remain mystery. We need to work or study hard with what we aim to. If we do not sacrifice something, there will be no a chance to step up.

ALBAÑO BLOG: How Can Digital Literacy Improve Student well- being?

Written by: Ginaida Albaño

We all know that we are in the modern world that having a different type of technologies. It’s a big help for us because we can easily communicate with your friend, and family.
What are the benefit of Digital Literacy and how it can affect in student life?

Expanding Knowledge

Today’s young people are increasingly adopting various digital tools. But they are not as open minded as using these technologies. In this modern generation many students have taken comfort in posting pictures on various social media. So it can be a way for teachers to inspire learners and expand their knowledge of technology.

Encourage Lifelong learning

Technology is what we are using in our daily lives. Let us continue to use it to explore and teach different techniques. This is way for the students to be successful.

According to “Blooms Digital Taxonomy”, the act of creating requires to a higher or of thinking than other activities like remembering, understanding and applying.
When students use different tools they become more creative and have a deeper idea to discover.

Digital tools also help students when they apply for a job and apply their skills in to different companies. They can create showcase their personal brands with portfolios of their personal student work.

Why is Digital Literacy Important?

In recent year people have been communicating through letters but soon all of them have been replace by different kinds of technologies. Children nowadays have learned different skills through digital literacy.

According to “N. Anderson”, New Media and New Media Literacy: the “Horizon Has Become the Landscape- New Media Are Here”, report produced by Cable in the Classroom, 2002, pp. 30-35)

How easy it is for young people to learn to speak, so too can they learn to use technology.
By the age 3 to 5 years old Children already know how to use cellphone and other applications.

Digital literacy has many benefits in our country. It can also help to improve our economy.
It also helps us as a person. However, we should also responsible for using various technologies.

CABOTAJE BLOG: Digital Literacy: How digital technologies can make education easier?

Written by: Hector H. Cabotaje

We are now in a world where technology is one of the basic needs for every day’s life. Technology can be used for trivial things, such as playing mobile games, sharing worthless post on Facebook, and watching un-educational videos on YouTube that are extremely time consuming. But where exactly should it be used? And how to use it properly without wasting time? You must be guesting. But I’ll tell you.

Technology has massive contribution to education, it can be used to make education easier, requiring just enough discipline and responsible for its use. It will help teachers and especially the students to make education easier. Technology is important in education especially to the students. According to Tyler Wantulok, ‘’having access to other information outside of the book gives students many different ways to learn a concept. Teachers can come up with creative ways to teach their students that keeps them engaged. Technology has changed the learning environment so that learning is more hands-on. Schools throughout the nation are diverse in income, and often kids don’t always get the resources they need. The implementation of technology in schools helps close that gap’’. It simply shows how the students learn and how the teachers teach have become easier. Before we go any further, below are the lists that will help education easier:

  1. Digital Applications that helps students and teachers to communicate easier;
  • There are many apps that can be used to make education easier. We have Edmodo and Google classroom, this is used to enable teachers to pass their instruction to their students faster. Students can also pass their activities, quizzes, and assignments through it. But it requires your own mobile phone and internet for you to be updated on what the teacher posts here.

2. Search engines. (Yahoo, Google, Amazon etc…)

  • You can use it to make education easier by simply typing the information you want to get, it will immediately appear after you press the ‘’go’’ button. Using it makes it easier to find information. It will not be as difficult to find information as you would in a book.

3. Software’s. (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher etc…)

  • Using these will make easier to present topics, create outlines, and computing grades. To the teachers, there’s no need to write on the board because your topic can be presented using PowerPoint presentation. Computing student’s grades would be easier using excel. To the students, we can used Microsoft word to make essays and other written activities. It can also be used by the teachers, they can write their topics and print it so they can distribute it to the students.

4. Computers/Laptops/Mobile Phones/Internet

  • I think this is the most important, because it is necessary for you to apply everything I have mentioned. But we have to be responsible of using these things. Because using these things has no limit that can leads to cyber crime. However, using these thing can really help to make education easier.

As a future Educator; I will make use of these things to make education easier, it is very helpful to the learners and teachers. We are in the modern world, so we need the modern things in order to teach efficiently. John Dewey said, ‘’If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow’’. In the new literacy, we have to teach using digital technologies in order to keep our learners engage to our lessons.
